Booking and fees

When can I book an appointment for the 2027 tax season?

HB Taxes & Bookkeeping is opening for the 2027 tax season, when 2026 returns are prepared (January through April 2027). Join the interest list and we'll contact you as soon as appointments open.

How much does tax preparation cost?

Starting prices are: simple 1040 from $175, itemized from $275, Schedule C from $375, Schedule E from $325 plus $100 per additional property, and small business returns from $850. Monthly bookkeeping starts at $175/month. You'll get a quote before work begins. See pricing.

Are your fees based on my refund?

No. Fees are never based on the size of your refund. You pay for the work involved in preparing your return.

What should I bring to my tax appointment?

Photo ID, Social Security cards or ITIN letters for everyone on the return, last year's return, all W-2, 1099, and 1098 forms, records of business or rental income and expenses, any estimated tax payments you made, and bank details for direct deposit.

What areas do you serve?

Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Kodak, Seymour, Wears Valley, and the rest of Sevier County, plus nearby Knox, Blount, Jefferson, and Cocke counties.

Tennessee taxes

Does Tennessee have a state income tax?

Tennessee has no state income tax on earned income such as wages. The Hall income tax on interest and dividends was fully repealed for tax years beginning January 1, 2021. Most Tennessee households file only a federal individual income tax return. Businesses may still owe Tennessee taxes such as sales tax, business tax, or franchise and excise tax.

Do I have to collect sales tax on my cabin rental?

In Tennessee, rentals of lodging for less than 90 consecutive days are subject to state and local sales tax, including required fees such as cleaning and pet fees. If a booking platform collects and remits Tennessee sales tax on its bookings, you don't report those bookings yourself, but you should keep records. Direct bookings are your responsibility. Read the rental owner basics.

Contractors and self-employed

Do I need to send a 1099-NEC to my subcontractors?

If your business paid a non-employee $2,000 or more for services during 2026, you generally need to file Form 1099-NEC for those payments. For payments made before 2026, the threshold was $600. After 2026, the threshold is adjusted for inflation. If you withheld backup withholding, a 1099-NEC is required regardless of the amount. More on 1099-NEC.

Do I need to make quarterly estimated tax payments?

Generally yes, if you're self-employed and expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file. Estimated payments cover both income tax and self-employment tax and are due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year.

When do I owe self-employment tax?

You generally owe self-employment tax and file Schedule SE if your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more. The rate is 15.3% (Social Security and Medicare), and half of it is deductible when figuring adjusted gross income.

Rental owners

Is my short-term rental reported on Schedule E or Schedule C?

Most rental income is reported on Schedule E. According to IRS Publication 527, if you provide substantial services mainly for guests' convenience, such as regular cleaning, changing linens, or maid service, the income is reported on Schedule C and self-employment tax may apply. The details matter, so we review each property's situation.

I rented my home for only a few days. Do I report it?

If you use a dwelling as a residence and rent it for fewer than 15 days during the year, the IRS says you generally don't report the rental income and don't deduct rental expenses.

Bookkeeping

My books are months (or years) behind. Can you help?

Yes. Bookkeeping cleanup and catch-up brings your records current so your tax return can be prepared accurately. It's quoted after a short review of your records, and it's best started well before a filing deadline.

What's included in monthly bookkeeping?

Transaction categorization, bank and credit card reconciliations, monthly profit and loss and balance sheet reports, tracking payments to subcontractors for year-end 1099s, and a year-end package for your tax return. It starts at $175/month.

What services don't you provide?

HB prepares tax returns and provides bookkeeping. We don't provide attest services; see the disclaimer at the bottom of every page.
